How Long does it Take to Process Australian Citizenship by Descent?

  5. The applicant should be able to prove that he or she understand the implications of being an Australian citizen.
  6. The applicant should prove that he or she inclines to have an ongoing relationship and ties with the country.
  7. If the applicant is below 15 years of age the application form must be signed by the parent.

Obtaining Australian Citizenship by Descent

The following specifications are mandatory for applicant to obtain Australian citizenship through descent

Three is no fee or cost in obtaining the Australian Citizenship by Descent except the payment made for the application form.

To obtain the Australian citizenship through descent, one of the parents at least, should be a citizen of Australia at the time of the birth of the applicant.

Even if the parent has subsequently relinquished the citizenship, the applicant can still apply on the basis of having been born when one of the parents or both were Australian citizens.

If the Australian parent who is a citizen or was a citizen of Australia during the birth of the applicant is a citizen by descent, then the parent should have spent at 2 years in Australia, as an Australian citizen.

Proof of identity of the parents and the proof of their citizenship is mandatory to obtain the Australian Citizenship by descent.

The applicant should have been born outside Australia

All original certificates or certified copies should be submitted as proof.

The right to certify lies only with Australian citizens or a citizen of the applicant resident country who are from one of the professions listed in Form 118

How long does it take to process Australian citizenship by descent?

The procedure to obtain citizenship by descent usually takes less than 6 months, provided all the above specifications have been met and the officials are satisfied with the proofs.
